Operation PROM
LECOM Bradenton Emergency Medicine Club staged a mock car crash at the Lakewood Ranch The High School Football Stadium on the afternoon of April 27, 2006 before an audience of 1,200 high school students. The crash was intended to emphasize the consequences of drinking and driving. Two crashed vehicles were on site, each with two passengers inside. To emphasize the dangers of drinking and driving, the enactment included the death of one passenger. A dose of reality was added when a sobriety test was performed on the drunk driver while one of the passengers was extricated from the vehicle and taken from the scene by ambulance. By having Bayflight on scene the students were able to see the full emergency resources from Manatee County as they participated in the production of this event.
Emergency Medical Services, East Manatee Fire Rescue, Manatee County Sheriff's Department, and Bayflight responded just as though they would on a real emergency call. Operation Prom took place on the eve of the Lakewood Ranch High School's prom weekend. According to Matt Rudolph, OMSII (PR Chair) a key organizer of this staging, the purpose of this event was to provide high school students with a realistic image of the consequences of drunk driving. "The staging is designed to make a strong impact on the students as they begin a weekend of prom festivities and help them make good choices. The students should see that there are tragic consequences to drunk driving and there can be many victims."
